Workload pattern

Initially there was a great deal of joint work as the project began to be fleshed out. The enormity of the project meant that it would need to be broken into pieces digestible by individuals or pairs of students. This also affected the project design -- it had to be modular. Each piece required independent study. During this phase students would report what they had learned in their separate readings. Sometimes detail would be discussed only with me, or with me and those one or two others whose own piece of the project would be affected. Some things, like program design, could interest or affect everyone and so saw broader discussion. Putting it all together required further communication between students whose pieces interfaced one another's. Project write-up was each individual's responsibility.
