iClicker

A wireless, handheld device students use to respond to in-class multi-choice questions; collected responses are shown and discussed in class. An online platform named iClicker Cloud (formerly REEF) allows students to respond to in-class questions using a phone app or a browser. The two student voting systems can be used in class together.

Crowdmark

An online, collaborative grading tool with concurrent manual grading and online submission and distribution of assignments and tests. Up to 200 multiple-choice questions can be automatically graded.

Odyssey

The examination management part of the Odyssey system helps instructors schedule, print and administer written exams. For other parts of the Odyssey system (TA management, graduate admission management) please see their home page. There is an setting in Odyssey to use Crowdmark (Odyssey takes care of scheduling and printing a test, Crowdmark handles online grading) - see the Crowdmark documentation above for further details.

Mobius

An online, multi-media courseware platform supporting in-content interactive feedback questions, assessments and demonstrations designed for mathematics, science, and engineering disciplines. A growing number of free online courses from the University of Waterloo are available at university and pre-university levels (Open Math, Open Engineering, CEMC Courseware).

Piazza

A free online student-student and student-teacher course Q&A platform, very popular with University of Waterloo students for its easy-to-use navigation interface and wiki-style collaborative answer posts. Piazza supports MathJax for easy entry of mathematics notation. Piazza also handles group-based discussions.

PEAR

The Peer Evaluation, Assessment and Review online platform is a multi-stage writing submission and review tool. Submissions can be made by individuals or class groups. Reviews are by student peers and instructors.

LEARN

The University of Waterloo course management system is named LEARN and is hosted by D2L (Desire2Learn, Brightspace). It provides course email, news, gradebook, forums, dropboxes, eportfolio, calendar, teams, surveys, quizzes and rubrics. It also connects with a growing number of third-party products like Mobius, iClicker and Crowdmark.

PebblePad - ePortfolio

PebblePad is an online ePortfolio platform where students can individually collect, exhibit and reflect on evidence of their learning.

Adobe Connect and Bongo

Adobe Connect is an interactive, video and text student-instructor communication platform with onscreen lecture capture and online lecture delivery.

Bongo is video communication platform with similar features to Adobe Connect. In addition to web conferencing (video classroom) it offers a video assessment tool.

Turnitin

A text matching tool that reports similarities of submitted student documents to existing internet material and academic documents.

A related free tool called iThenticate used by researchers for reporting on matching articles, theses and other publications is also available.

Qualtrics

An advanced survey tool that offers a large library of surveys and question types, branches and other control logic, and anonymous or respondent tracking options.

OverLeafPro

An online LaTeX and Rich Text collaborative writing and publishing tool.

JupyterLab

A browser-based interactive computing environment for programming languages like Python, R and many others.

MarkBox

An online randomized multiple-choice test creation and grading tool. Grading is automatic for multiple-choice questions and manual for written-answer questions. This system can replace Scantron cards.
