Turnitin in UW's LEARN Course Management System

UW LEARN Dropbox and Turnitin Settings

The following LEARN dropbox and dropbox Turnitin settings are available in your LEARN course. The only mandatory setting is the dropbox folder name. A few settings have defaults, shown below with [x]. The rest are optional.

Folder name: _______________ - the name of the dropbox folder

• a due date and time put in the folder name will aid students

Originality check: [ ] Enable Turnitin for this folder. - when checked you will find Turnitin settings appear at the end of the LEARN settings page

Folder type:
[x] Individual submission folder - each student submits their own work
[ ] Group submission folder
    Group Category (pull down menu - explained below)

• any group member can make a submission
• all group members see their group's submissions
• every group member gets the same mark by default
• the pull-down menu above is to select a group category name. A group category name is a name for a collection of LEARN student groups that were created to use this dropbox folder.
  
• the students in a group only see their group dropbox not every other group's dropbox and the instructor only sees the dropbox name not individual group dropboxes until marking when they then see group dropboxes
• group names are used for group dropbox names
• the LEARN group tool can make random fixed size groups or a fixed number of groups but for more flexibility make the groups yourself and upload the group members into LEARN (ask learnhelp@uwaterloo.ca for this)

Category: (pull down menu) - make/pick a dropbox category

• a dropbox category is a heading/container name that holds a collection of dropbox folders for a bit of organization

Grade Item: - make/pick a gradebook item (i.e. column) to hold a student's dropbox mark - can be linked to the LEARN gradebook later

Out of: - the maximum mark of the dropbox submission

• only needed when a dropbox is connected to the gradebook or when using the Turnitin GradeMark tool

Default Scoring Rubric: - pick a rubric for scoring submissions or ignore this setting

Instructions: - add a message/instructions to show students when they click the dropbox name

ePortfolio Artifacts:
[x] Allow users to add this folder to their ePortfolio

• can uncheck this; if checked then feedback comments given to submitted work can be included in the student's LEARN eportfolio with a certified marking

Attached Files: - // an instructor can add a file and a audio file for students when they visit a dropbox - eg an instructions file. This file is viewable outside the dates the dropbox is open/available.//

Dropbox Submission Options:

Files allowed per submission:
[x] Unlimited
[ ] One file per submission

Submissions:
[x] All submissions are kept (default) - a student can submit more than once, each submitted file is viewable in the dropbox
[ ] Only the most recent submission is kept
[ ] Only one submission allowed

Turnitin OriginalityCheck Options:

[x] Generate Originality Reports (pre-selected when using Turnitin)

[ ] Allow submitters to see Originality Reports

• check this if you want your students to see the Turnitin report created from their submission

GradeMark Available to Students
[ date here ] [ time here ] EST/Toronto, Canada time

• the default time is the current time (time when dropbox is made)
• ignore if not using the Turnitin GradeMark submission marking tool or set to end of term for now if you want to use the tool but students should not see the mark until you change the release date later

Frequency:
[x] Automatic originality checking on all submissions (default)
[ ] Identify individual submissions for originality checking

• the 2nd option is useful when a student submits several files to the dropbox but an instructor wants to manually select a particular file for Turnitin checking e.g. a rough draft and a final report could be submitted but only the final report is checked

Check submissions against: (all options are default)
[x] User paper database
[x] Current and archived internet
[x] Periodicals, journals, & publications

• the 1st option means a student's submission is checked against the Turnitin database of collected submissions and against the UW database of collected submissions
• the other 2 options describe material that Turnitin has collected from the web and from other sources available to it

Index files for originality checking
[x] Allow other files to be checked against submission (default)

• student dropbox submissions are added to the UW submissions database (not the Turnitin database) for use in any future UW Turnitin submission comparison

• this setting only appears once the settings page has been saved, closed and reopened. It is a link to a web page on the Turnitin site with some additional settings (some new, some duplicated above), but at this time LEARN ignores these extra Turnitin settings.

A note on File Formats

A LEARN dropbox accepts any file format for uploading and downloading from a dropbox. A smaller set of common file types are viewable in the online LEARN/d2l viewer. A still smaller subset can be checked by Turnitin for processing. For example, a LEARN dropbox can accept Mac .pages files but Turnitin cannot process this file type. The following file types are supported by Turnitin: MS Word, MS Powerpoint, WordPerfect, PostScript, Acrobat PDF, HTML, RTF, Plain Text.
