Help with LEARN and CTE Teaching Resources
- To check the look or layout of a LEARN course, to check which items
are accessible to students, or to verify course Gradebook calculations,
impersonate the course "Test" student.
https://uwaterloo.ca/learn-help/instructors/additional-topics/impersonate-test-student
- LEARN help pages: https://uwaterloo.ca/learn-help/instructors
- How to add your TAs to LEARN:
Choose TA Level 4 for access rights like an instructor account.
Choose TA Level 1 for access rights like a student account.
https://uwaterloo.ca/learn-help/instructors/adding-teaching-assistants
- Class Photo list: click the Instructor Tools link on your course
home page.
https://math.uwaterloo.ca/math-faculty-computing-facility/resources/instructors/course-management/photo-classlists
- Export a classlist by section or group by using the Grades tool or
the Instructor Tools link on the course home page.
- There is new Report tool that exports information about groups, quiz & dropbox submissions. This tool is not on by default and has to be added to
your course navigation toolbar (see Customizing your Navbar). There is no help page for this
tool so try it out to see its report formats.
- TurnItIn (plagiarism detection and feedback),
MapleTA (smart quiz software),
Clickers (increasing in-class engagement) and library eReserves are all integrated with LEARN.
To read more about how to use the integration software, see the
links under the Integration heading on the LEARN Instructor's help page.

Voice Care for Lecturers
CTE staff offer the following for lecturers to
help keep your lecture voice in good shape this term:
- advice from five 5 short videos by
Dr. Rich Brown, Theatre Department, for the
Center for Instructional Innovation and Assessment at
Western Washington University.
In the first video skip to minute 2 to get to the reasons for getting
a tired voice while lecturing.

Freeing Your Natural Voice, by Kristin Linklater, 2006 edition,
Professor of Theatre Arts at Columbia University (retired), New York.
Teaching with Enthusiasm
Another short video from the same
institution as the Voice Care videos above (Center for Instructional
Innovation and Assessment at Western Washington University).
The video of Dr. Kristen Larson (associate professor in the Physics/Astronomy
Department at Western Washington University) includes
- How do you tap into your enthusiasm and learn to share it with your classes?
- How does showing enthusiasm differ from entertaining students?
- What have been your challenges for teaching with enthusiasm?
- How do you keep it fun and interesting for yourself and your students year
after year?

Midterm Season
- UW help for students:
- If students don't arrange to pay their fees then the Registrar's office drops
them from the LEARN system in the middle of February.
