There recently was a letter in the New England Journal of Medicine describing
 patients with MS who had decreased ability to smell.  The authors found that
 this correlated with plaques in the areas of the brain that control smelling. 
 The reference is New England Journal of Medicine volume 336, pages 1918-1919,
 June 26.1997.
