Large Scale Nonlinear and Semidefinite Programming:

Workshop in memory of Jos Sturm

Photo
Wednesday, May 12 to Saturday, May 15, 2004
Just before the CORS/INFORMS Joint International Meeting starting on the 16th in Banff, Canada.

Jos Sturm was scheduled to be a plenary speaker at this workshop. He passed away on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, from a cerebral hemorrhage that occurred almost two months earlier. ( obituary and research interests)

Jos was a leader in both the computational and theoretical side of numerical optimization. We all know about, and most of us have used, the software package SeDuMi for Semidefinite Programming. The success of this package is based both on its user friendly front end as well as the careful numerical analysis involved in the development.

We have scheduled a special session in memory of Jos Sturm. We have invited friends, colleagues, and family members. (We are requesting donations to help defray the family travel costs.)

A Special Issue (in Mathematical Programming Series B) of published (refereed) papers is also planned.

May 12 Short Courses on
SDP: Theory, Algorithms and Applications

On Wednsday May 12, 2004, there will be two short courses. (PLEASE register separately from the workshop.)

  1. Theory and Applications of SDP (9:00-12:00)
(including motivation as to how large scale SDPs arise both in theory and applications).
  2. Algorithms for SDP (14:00-17:00)
