Waterloo Thunder U13 Rep Soccer Team
Welcome to the Waterloo Thunder U13 Rep Soccer Team. We hope that the following information will help us and our sons have an enjoyable season.
Leroy James Head Coach 880-9962 lryjms@rogers.com
Mark Johnson Assistant Coach 648-3499 maryhill@presglas.com
Barry MacCormack Manager 746-4746 maccormack4746@rogers.com
The philosophy is to provide the best environment to field a winning team, by optimizing learning, player development and the enjoyment of soccer.
To advance to the Ontario Youth Soccer League (OYSL) for next season.
To help all team members enjoy the game of soccer.
To improve each player’s skill level.
To have a winning season in the South Region Soccer League (SRSL).
To develop as a team with a strong work ethic and cohesiveness
To foster continuity and a competitive spirit.
· Have your son at the game or practice on time or call one of the coaches if you are unable to.
· Make sure your son has the equipment he needs with him and enough to drink.
· Ensure your son has his soccer shoes on and is mentally prepared half an hour before our games and ten minutes before practices
· Show support for the coaches’ decisions.
· Set an example on how to be a good sport.
· Please offer encouragement from the sidelines, but no “coaching” players during the game.
· Stay in areas of the field designated for spectators.
· Don’t be critical of the play or behavior of your son or other team members after a game.
· 17 boys have been picked to play for the team. Don’t expect that there will be equal playing time in every game.
· Please observe the “24 hour rule” to talk with the coaches if you have concerns, rather than immediately after the game.
“Rep” soccer means representative soccer. Your son will be an ambassador for the City of Waterloo and the Waterloo Minor Soccer Club. As a result, the coaching staff will expect certain levels of behaviour from the players. Good manners and politeness are required at all times. The coaching staff will be promoting this during our season as an important part of soccer. We ask for your help by setting an example with us.
There will be consequences for violations of team policy. Coaches will deal with disruptive behavior with appropriate disciplinary action.
As part of the code of conduct, the coaches expect:
· No complaints about playing time or position played. No swearing, foul language or negative comments will be allowed.
· Players to show respect for their teammates, referees, parents and coaches
· Practice time is team time.
· All players are asked to be at the field and ready to warm-up 30 minutes before the scheduled starting time.
· Parents are asked to give the coaches time to talk to the players immediately after the game
· Parents are asked to watch all games from the opposite side of the field from the players. Parents are asked not to go behind the net to watch or come over to the player’s side unless asked (league rule).
· Waterloo Minor Soccer has asked coaches not to drive players to games or practices. This is an insurance issue that was brought up a couple of years ago. We will be glad to help arrange a ride if you need one.
· Initially, we are planning to have 2 x 1.5 hour practices per week. We can change the frequency and/or duration if we find that the boys are tired (after a tournament) or during the school months.
· We are considering practicing on Monday and Thursday evenings. There will be no scheduled weekend practice.
· Attendance at all practices is mandatory unless otherwise specified. Please call one of the coaches if your son cannot attend a practice.
· All players are asked to be at the field and ready to warm-up 15 minutes before our scheduled starting time.
· Players are not allowed on the field until a member of the coaching staff has arrived. This is for the safety of the boys.

We will receive our League and League Cup schedule soon. You will get a copy at the first practice after that. We were told that our games will probably be on Monday nights with some weekend games possible, but this will be confirmed when we receive our schedules. Our first league game will probably be the week after the May long weekend.
The South Region Soccer League has a very good website which tracks schedules and game results. It also has a lot of other helpful information. You can find the URL at:
http://www.southregionsoccerleagu.com/
Our team website is: http://www.stats.uwaterloo.ca/~dlmcleis/soccer/
There are no playoffs in our soccer league. However, during the season we will play League Cup games, in addition to our regularly scheduled games. These games will be played against the teams in all divisions, from Elite to Third. This is a single game elimination tournament. Since we don’t have playoffs these games are very important for us to win. Please keep these dates open.
The team has been entered in the Ontario Cup, a provincial playdown competition that is concurrent with the regular season and League Cup. Some travel will likely be involved. Details and schedules will be distributed when available.
Tournaments are good for team development in many aspects. Since we play as many as 3 games in one day we can develop the players’ skills and understanding of the game quickly. It is also a good way to bring the team and parents together.
If anyone is interested in organizing a BBQ at any of our tournaments please let the coaches know so we can plan our warm-ups and team talks around it.
We only plan to enter 4 competitive ournaments this year:
West Niagara Invitational May 7 to 8
Mississauga International May 21 to 23 (Victoria Day weekend)
Waterloo Invitational June 18 to 19
Henderson Memorial (London) September 3 to 5 (Labour Day weekend)
We ask you to let us know as soon as possible if any of these tournaments present a problem with your family vacation time. Please complete a vacation sheet and return to team manager as soon as possible.
· Only team jerseys, team shorts and team socks are to be worn during our games
· Team jerseys and socks may not be worn for our practices. Team jerseys should not be worn for school or other occasions until our season is over.
· Shin pads and approved soccer cleats must be worn at all games and practices.
· Please bring enough water/sports drink for your son to last him the entire game or practice.
