The total mark is 35. The marks breakdown is as follows: PS#8 12 Q1 5 Q3 Total: 17 (do not mark 4) PS#9 2 Q1 2 Q2 2 Q4 6 Q6 6 Q7 Total: 18 17+18 is 35 ------------------------------------- ------------------------------------- comments: PS8, Q3: Many people didn't bother to check that the function L was linear. Also, in showing it is bijective, some people showed that the matrix L(A) is invertible, rather than showing that the transformation L is invertible. PS9, Q7: In part (b), a lot of people didn't realize that the determinant could be expressed as a product the form (c-b)(c-a)(b-a). This led to some rather complicated conjectures in part (c). ----------------------------------------------- Overall the assignment was done quite well. The only question that had a lot of trouble was question 3 in problem set #8. ----------------------------------------------- - question 1 from problem set 8 was generally well done by most students - many students did not check that L was a linear transformation for question 3 - everyone seems to have a good handle on determinants (watch out for arithmetic errors!!) - for question 7, remember that a conjecture is a generalization or judgement about every case based on some observations - overall the assignment was well done ----------------------------------------------- 1. Very well done. 2. Some trouble here. Some didn't even attempt it. Some others forgot to prove that L was linear, and only showed that it was invertible. 1,2,4 Very well done. 6. Most people correctly found this determinant as well. One student just gave the solution and wrote that it was determined by Mathcad. 7. Pretty well done. Some didn't factor b) as much as possible so had trouble with c). -----------------------------------------------
