V4 Valve Adjustment - Step One

STEP ONE: Gather Supplies

Tune-up Supplies Gathered here are some of the tools and supplies you'll need for a tune-up.

Perched atop the factory service manual is the famous "special tool". The official name for this part is "V4 Tappet Adjust", part number 07979-MK30000.

Dangling off to the right are a pair of long feeler gauges, .005 inches. Long ones like this let you easily introduce a gentle bend when fitting them into the gap, whereas short ones require a more severe bend, and that can interfere with your judgment of proper fit.

New spark plugs (NGK DPR8EA-9) are nice, along with a new oil filter and fresh synthetic oil. Leaning across the oil filter is the Honda V4 tappet wrench, whose official name is "valve adjust wrench", part number 07908-MB00100.

The toolkit that came with the bike is shown, but you'll want some better tools than these. In particular you'll want a straight-blade screwdriver with a fairly long reach, and you'll need hex key (the one from the toolkit is fine) for removing the chrome bolts that hold the valve cover in place.
