UW-ACE Course Checklist and TA Support

In preparing for the term, a checklist is available that points out some course features and settings that can be of help for a trouble-free launch of your UW-ACE course.

Also available are some suggestions for using TAs for UW-ACE course setup.

University and Community access to UW-ACE course information

Access to course content - the syllabus, assignments, FAQs, subject resources etc is controllable through settings made available to course instructors. Confidential information about names and grades is restricted and protected by default. Different access levels - instructor, student (in course), UW member, general public - can be assigned to each command tab and every individual item in the main Lessons folder. Instructors can thus share their course with interested high-school, university, distant-ed and mature students, faculty members, special interest groups (SIG) and the general public.

By default, the Resources tab and the syllabus located within the Resources tab are set up for public access. Using the UW-ACE course search feature, students can read the syllabus of any UW-ACE course.

A course syllabus can be a file uploaded into the syllabus area of the course or created using the syllabus tool in UW-ACE.

To see how a course looks to the general public, click the eye-glass icon in the top, right corner of the page, then select Anonymous. You are taken to the Resources tab, while the other tabs are hidden. To return to the normal view of the course, click the eye-glass icon once more.

Unlike the Resources tab, the Lessons tab can contain a collection of files, folders and subfolders. Public access to one or more files and folders is simple to set up by changing the access settings on the folder, file, quiz, ...

Lessons > settings of folder,... > Access > Viewable by Everyone

and making the Lessons tab public

Manage > Tab Settings > Content/Lessons > Veiwable by Everyone

UW-ACE course Lesson pages look like and act like Windows folders, but they are more than file directories. Each folder displays a name and a HTML web page when selected. Instructors/editors can add text, style, layout and colour HTML features. Even JavaScript can be used. (See, for example, jsMath, a JavaScript program that translates LaTeX math expressions into LaTeX-quality HTML mathematics.)

UW-ACE Documentation

Information about the latest version of UW-ACE (ANGEL 7.4) is summarized and collected at UW-ACE documentation.

Models for UW-ACE courses

Faculty liaisons have collected information on how different users are making UW-ACE work effectively for a variety of course activities. There are some good models to follow. Please get in touch with me if you would like to learn more about making use of UW-ACE for the special needs and goals of your course.

You may be interested to swap experiences with other faculty members using UW-ACE. You can find any course in the system by using the "Find a Course" link at the head of the course list on your Home page. Click the link, select a term (e.g. 1095 for the current Spring 2009 term) and a subject e.g. MATH or CS, and the search result will show links to the current MATH or CS courses. Clicking a course name will bring you to the default starting page of a course, usually the Resources tab page with a syllabus link.
