Help for students in getting their UW email to work

Background

If you want to fix your UW email quickly then go to the next section and read this part later.

UW Instructors using the Crowdmark.com online grading system rely on commnucating with students for delivery and submission of assignments using the general email address system at UW.

Each UW student has an email alias of the form userid@uwaterloo.ca. Here userid is the UW LEARN/QUEST system student login name.

Crowdmark uses student email addresses of this form because it is integrated with the UW LEARN system which uses the same email format.

A student UW email alias is translated into a real UW email address by the UW WatIam system during delivery of email to the student. A student may have the older userid@mailservices.uwaterloo.ca real email address or the newer userid@edu.uwaterloo.ca real email address.

Each of the two different real email address forms has its own email client (email reader) at UW.

To read userid@mailservices.uwaterloo.ca email a student uses the Nexus email client.
(logon with LEARN/QUEST user name and password)

To read userid@edu.uwaterloo.ca email a student uses the Office 365 email client.
(logon with userid@edu.uwaterloo.ca but just click in the password field to be taken to another UW login page where you enter your LEARN/QUEST password)

It is left to the student to know which real email address they should have and which email client to use and to change their UW email alias settings in the UW WatIam system to reflect their real UW email address whenever their choice (when they have one) of UW email system changes.

Sometimes students forget to check and set their UW email WatIam setting. Sometimes the wrong UW email client is used. When either happens students don't get email from the LEARN or the Crowdmark systems. To fix the problem students should follow the steps in the next section.

Fixing your UW email

If you think you should be getting email from LEARN, Crowdmark or your instructor but are not then here's what to do:

  1. Email yourself at userid@uwaterloo.ca.
    Here userid is your UW LEARN/QUEST system student login name.
    Use any email system you like to do this.

  2. Try to read the UW email you just sent to yourself.

    If you don't know how to read email from UW then visit either of the UW IT help desks below for personal instruction. They can fix your email problems on the spot.

  3. If you can read the UW email you sent to yourself then you don't have a problem reading UW email from the LEARN or Crowdmark systems. Congratulations.

    If you are reading UW email but don't see the email you sent to yourself then maybe your email to userid@uwaterloo.ca is going to the other UW email server (there are 2 for undergrads: mailservices and Office 365) and you will have to use the UW email reader for that email server. Try both.

    To read mailservices userid@mailservices.uwaterloo.ca email use the Nexus email client.
    (logon with LEARN/QUEST user name and password)

    To read Office 365 userid@edu.uwaterloo.ca email use the Office 365 email client.
    (logon with userid@edu.uwaterloo.ca but just click in the password field to be taken to another UW login page where you enter your LEARN/QUEST password)

  4. If you still can't read the UW email you sent to yourself then the simplest thing to do is visit the UW IT help desks mentioned in the second step above.

    If you want to try one more step yourself first then visit the UW WatIam page, login with your UW LEARN/QUEST name and password and change the setting of
    Email forward (delivery mailbox):
    A correct setting would be either
    Email forward (delivery mailbox): myuserid@mailservices.uwaterloo.ca
    or
    Email forward (delivery mailbox): myuserid@edu.uwaterloo.ca
    If you don't know which UW email service you are using then visit one of the UW IT help locations above.

    Do not leave this setting empty else you will not receive UW email from your LEARN courses.

If you are able to read the UW email you sent to yourself but you are still not getting email from the Crowdmark system when your classmates are getting email about their assignments from Crowdmark then email this address cmadmin@uwaterloo.ca giving
