are pleased to present
Teaching Large Classes: Challenges & Opportunities
Dr. John O. Mitterer
A one day conference including a keynote presentation, a student
faculty panel, lunch, an afternoon of concurrent sessions, and a
closing wine and cheese reception.
When it comes to undergraduate education, sheer numbers long ago forced
us to develop mass production methods that make traditional educational
ideals seem unreachable and even quaint. I begin this talk by sharing
two powerful ideas, teaching as communication and teaching as
apprenticeship, which have helped me rise to the challenge. I will also
argue that the thoughtful use of digital technologies provides
far-reaching opportunities in large classes. Throughout, I will
illustrate my points by describing how we teach over 1000 students per
year in our introductory psychology course at Brock University.

Here are a few details not included in the message above:
The conference is still accepting proposals for speakers, although
the deadline of April 4th is almost here. Visit the site below to
see the proposal information. It seems a proposal can be an informal
description.

On the conference page is a link to view and submit teaching tips
about large classes. See
http://cubic.wlu.ca/page.php?grp_id=333&s_id=391&sb_id=1845
The registration page asks if you are going to the afternoon
concurrent sessions. There is no information about these two sessions
given in the agenda, aside from their times. Saying yes to the question
seems a good default answer.
The cost of the event is $35, except for members of WLU and IATHE. As
far as I can tell, UW is not a member of IATHE (http://www.iathe.org/).
If you know otherwise, please let me know.
