Introduction

The University of Waterloo's Faculty of Mathematics is home to an incredibly talented team of researchers. Unlike many universities with narrower departments of mathematics, our faculty has unparalleled breadth and depth of knowledge--along with the experience and expertise to excel in both academic pursuits and the application of our skills to real-world problems.

This directory features faculty members in our Departments of Applied Mathematics, Combinatorics and Optimization, Pure Mathematics, and Statistics and Actuarial Science. Researchers in the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science are featured in a second Faculty of Mathematics research directory.

One of the many strengths of the UW Faculty of Mathematics is the interdisciplinary approach to problem solving that has led to numerous successful outcomes. Cross-Faculty research collaboration occurs on an informal basis, as well as within the structure of our research centres and institutes, including:

  • Centre for Advanced Studies in Finance
  • Centre for Applied Cryptographic Research
  • Centre for Computational Mathematics in Industry and Commerce
  • Institute for Computer Research
  • Institute of Insurance and Pension Research
  • Institute for Quantitative Finance and Insurance
  • Institute for Quantum Computing
  • Survey Research Centre

UW Math researchers are committed to discovering new knowledge and finding ways to use that knowledge for the benefit of all. UW is the national leader in the transfer of ideas and technology to the private sector. More Canadian high-tech and knowledgebased spin-off companies trace their roots to UW than to any other school.

The Faculty of Mathematics has become a leading centre for teaching and research with extensive international links and industry partnerships. We are widely respected for empowering excellent co-op students and graduates to work with companies and organizations around the world to promote innovation and growth.

In many ways, UW is the antithesis of the old-fashioned isolated "ivory tower." Many of our most impressive achievements have arisen from creative engagement with real-world problems. As we head into our sixth decade, our vision includes even greater achievements in cutting-edge, world-class research.
