You’ll find Master’s or doctoral programs in a wide range of fields . UW’s Faculty of Mathematics is home to the Departments of Applied Mathematics, Combinatorics & Optimization, Pure Mathematics, Statistics & Actuarial Science, the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science.

2. It’s all about research.
UW Math houses the largest concentration of researchers in the mathematical and computing sciences in

North America. Work with the best – over 600 graduate students and 200 professors. Nineteen of our profs are recognized with research chairs in the mathematical and computing sciences. NSERC funding awarded to UW Math faculty researchers is significantly above the national average.

Located one hour’s drive west of Toronto, Waterloo Region is home to approximately 500,000 people and growing. It is home to two universities, the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, an excellent symphony orchestra and many in-town cultural activities. Waterloo is a great cultural mix – bordering farm country and in Canada’s Technology Triangle where Research in Motion (makers of the BlackBerry), Open Text and a growing number of other high-tech firms started and stayed.

Strong connections to industry bring exciting applied research opportunities for faculty and graduate students.

8. You keep what you develop.
Unlike at many universities, Waterloo researchers (including graduate students) own the rights to their intellectual property. The Waterloo Commercialization Office (WatCo) facilitates the commercial application of campus research for interested faculty and graduate students.

9. UW is family-friendly.
Priority for on-campus housing is given to graduate students with live-in dependants. Maternity/adoption bursaries and on-campus childcare help students find work-life balance.

10. A strong Graduate Student Association.
The UW GSA provides services for the campus graduate student community including organizing social events, health care, legal and tax aid. The Grad House is the oldest building on campus and serves as a restaurant/bar for graduate students.
