The Faculty of Mathematics is home to the
Centre for Education
in Mathematics and Computing which among many other things conducts mathematics and computing contests
each year for students in grades 7 through 12. Over
200,000 students participated in one of the Centre's many mathematics and
computing contests in 2009, including 13,340 students from around the world
who wrote
the Euclid
Contest. Read more about
Euclid Mathematics Contest: April 7, 2010
The Euclid Contest is used in admission and scholarship decisions
- While the Euclid Contest is not required for admission for Ontario high school
student, strong performance in the Euclid Contest can help earn you a place
in the Faculty of Mathematics. We strongly encourage you to prepare for and
participate in the Euclid Contest because it will help develop your problem-solving
skills and prepare you for
first-year university.
- The Euclid Contest, however, is required for you to be eligible for a Faculty
of Mathematics entrance
scholarship.
- If you are not an Ontario high school student, you're particularly encouraged
to write the Euclid Contest to demonstrate that you have sufficient mathematical
background to enter our programs. In the event that your mathematics background
cannot be demonstrated, you may be required to write the Euclid Contest, in
which case you will be contacted directly.
- If you are not attending high school but eligible to write the Euclid
Contest, please visit the Euclid Contest website for more information about how to register to write it.
Register for the Euclid Contest
- The Euclid Contest will be written in Canada and around the world on April
7, 2010. High schools and their students are encouraged to register by March 2,
2010. Late registrations may be accepted after
this date; however, we are unable to accept registrations after March 30,
2010.
- If you're currently attending an Ontario high school, find out about writing
the Euclid Contest in your school from one of your mathematics teachers.
- If you're an Ontario high school mathematics teacher, please visit the Euclid
Contest website for information about registering your students for the
contest.
- If you've completed university-level math beyond the OAC equivalent level,
you're not eligible to write the Euclid Contest.
Prepare for the Euclid Contest
- Students who prepare for the Euclid Contest, not surprisingly, do better on the Contest than students who don't prepare. What might surprise you, though, is that students who prepare for the Euclid Contest generally also do better in first year. Therefore, we strongly encourage you to prepare for the Euclid Contest – take advantage of all the materials available to help you prepare for it.
- The Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing provides the following materials and resources to help you prepare for the Euclid Contest:
- For additional information about the Contest, including topics covered in the problems and how to register, visit the Euclid Contest website.
Canadian Computing Competition: February 23, 2010
It is recommended that applicants to Bioinformatics and Computer Science
write the Canadian Computing Competition, though it is not a requirement for
admission. The aim of the competition is to provide students with an opportunity
to test their
ability
in designing
and understanding algorithms, as well as in programming.
The Canadian Computing Competition will be written in Canada on February 23,
2010. The deadline for high school students to register is January 26,
2010.
For more information, visit the
Canadian Computing Competition website.
Other Mathematics Contests
There are a number of other Mathematics contests that students in junior and senior grades
can participate in. The Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge, the Pascal,
Cayley, and Fermat Contests, the Euclid Contest and the Gauss Contest are
a few of them.
