Admission Categories

The Faculty of Mathematics offers eleven admission categories or entry programs, as they are also known

Bioinformatics
Co-op and Regular
OUAC application code: WBI

If a cross between biology and information technology interests you, Bioinformatics may be just the program you are looking for. Bioinformatics is helping to revolutionize how scientific research is conducted in both industry and in academic centres. Bioinformatics is the interdisciplinary area that applies the latest developments in computer science to a wealth of new biological and medical data.

Business Administration (WLU) and Computer Science (Waterloo) Double Degree
Co-op only
OUAC application code: WBC

Earn two highly respected degrees from two outstanding institutions. This option allows you to graduate with a Bachelor of Computer Science (BCS) from the University of Waterloo and a BBA from Wilfrid Laurier University. You will experience the same significant training in computer science as all other BCS students, along with expert training in business and economics, to meet the demands of today's information-rich society for personnel with both computer science and business management knowledge.

Business Administration (WLU) and Mathematics (Waterloo) Double Degree
Co-op only
OUAC application code: WBA

If you want to combine mathematical and computer sciences with business courses, you will want to apply to the Business Administration (WLU) and Mathematics (Waterloo) Double Degree. This admission category combines courses at the University of Waterloo with courses at Wilfrid Laurier University. This option allows you to graduate with a BMath from the University of Waterloo and a BBA from Wilfrid Laurier University in the time it usually takes to complete one co-op degree.

Computational Mathematics
Co-op and Regular
OUAC application code: WCM

Mathematical models are used to simulate problems found in diverse fields, including business, economics, engineering, finance, medicine, and science. This program teaches students to harness the increasing power of computers for solving industrial-size mathematical problems in any one of these fields. If you are equally interested in mathematics and computer science and imagine yourself someday working in industry solving large-scale problems, Computational Mathematics would be a good fit for you.

Computer Science
Co-op and Regular
OUAC application code: WCS

The discipline of computer science has broadened dramatically over the last decades, embracing applications in text management, machine learning, health and bioinformatics, finance, and digital media. The Web has ignited increased interest in distributed computing and networking. Software engineering has evolved from the intersection of computing and engineering. At Waterloo, you may explore these and other developments within the vast field of the computer sciences.

Computing and Financial Management
Co-op only
OUAC application code: WCF

Computing and Financial Management, offered jointly by the School of Computer Science and the School of Accountancy, provides a strong core background in computer science as well as accounting and financial management. With knowledge of both areas, graduates will be prepared to fill the demands of the financial services sector for risk management services, software systems for secure transactions, fraud and money laundering detection, and management of large database systems. Choice in the upper-year courses allows students to specialized in a variety of areas, and by careful selection of optional courses, you can go on to graduate studies in these disciplines.

Mathematics
Co-op and Regular
OUAC application code: WM

The Mathematics admission category is highly recommended if you love mathematics but are uncertain in first year about where to focus your studies. This door into the Math Faculty is the most flexible admissions category, giving you a generous period of time in which to explore your academic strengths and the options available to you as a Mathematics student. By second year, students usually will have decided on a major in one or a combination of the following programs: Actuarial Science, Applied Mathematics, Combinatorics and Optimization, Mathematical Finance, Mathematical Physics, Mathematics Teaching Option, Operations Research, Pure Mathematics, or Statistics; or you may opt to make Mathematical Sciences your major in which you'll put together a package of courses from several of the programs just listed.

Mathematics/Business Administration
Co-op and Regular
OUAC application code: WMB

If you want to combine the mathematical and computer sciences with an outstanding package of business courses, you will want to apply directly to the Mathematics/Business Administration program. As early as second year, you may pursue one of two specializations: Economics or Human Resources Management. These options allow you to tailor your degree to your interests and give you a competitive edge in the marketplace. NEW: Mathematics/Business Administration now offers a new spin-off major in Information Technology Management that begins in second year.

Mathematics/Chartered Accountancy
Co-op only
OUAC application code: WN

You are well-suited for Chartered Accountancy studies in the Faculty of Mathematics if you have a keen interest in mathematics, computing, and accounting. You'll prepare for a field in which our graduates play a leading role in the development and utilization of computer-based accounting information systems, the analysis of the information provided by these systems, and the decision-making processes and allocation of resources so crucial to an organization's success in the modern business world.

Mathematics/Financial Analysis and Risk Management
Co-op and Regular
OUAC application code: WMF

The world of finance requires professionals with strong mathematical and analytical abilities. Combining mathematics with finance, accounting, economics, and risk management, you'll prepare for careers in banking, investment management, and risk management. Mathematics/Financial Analysis and Risk Management will prepare you to write the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) exams. You'll also be prepared to pursue other professional designations in finance, such as the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) or Fellow of the Canadian Securities Institute (FCSI).

Software Engineering
Co-op only
OUAC application code: WSO

Complex software systems have become critical to the operation of many systems in areas, such as banking, communications, manufacturing, power generation, and transportation. Progress in computer science and accumulated experience with industrial production of software have led to the emergence of software engineering as a separate discipline. This program applies engineering philosophy, principles, and techniques to the creation, operation, and maintenance of computer software. You will graduate with a Bachelor of Software Engineering (BSE). This program is designed to be accredited by both the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board and the Computer Science Accreditation Council.
