About the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) 2010

University of Waterloo Welcomes The World!

In the same year that Canada will host the athletic Winter Olympic Games, the University of Waterloo is equally proud to have been selected as the first Canadian university to host one of the world's most prestigious academic competitions-- the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI). This annual week-long competition, which has been held since 1989, features 400 of the world's top computer science (or informatics) high school students who come from about 100 countries to compete.

The IOI, which was first proposed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), is the world's premier high school computer programming competition and it is one of only eight academic Olympiads for high school students.

The goals of the IOI are to bring together, challenge, and give recognition to young students from around the world who are the most talented in informatics (computer programming), and to foster friendship among these students from diverse cultures.

Outstanding Partnership Opportunity

The chance to associate your corporate brand with one of the world's most prestigious academic competitions, and in front of 400 outstanding young people, informatics coaches from numerous countries, their families and peers is a unique and valuable branding and recruitment opportunity. This prestigious event offers our major corporate partners an opportunity to make a positive impression before some elite young programmers, many of whom may become technology innovators and business leaders. Students are selected through national computing contests. About 250,000 young people compete in total each year for the exciting opportunity to represent their country.

The Opportunity:

This event is a unique opportunity to showcase to the students, their families and the world not just the University of Waterloo but our corporate partners, Waterloo Region, as well as Ontario and Canada, as dynamic global leaders in technology and innovation. An important part of the week long experience is to entertain the young people and take them to regional cultural and technological attractions such as the Stratford Festival, the Perimeter Institute, CIGI, and Niagara Falls.

Each country delegation consists of: 4 students, 2 teachers and guests.
