Graduate Studies

Graph

The Department of Applied Mathematics is an active centre of both fundamental and applied research, focusing on problems in engineering, science and medicine. Graduate students have the opportunity to undertake research in the areas of Control and Dynamical Systems, Fluid Mechanics, Mathematical Medicine and Biology, Mathematical Physics and Scientific Computation.

Faculty members are involved in a wide variety of interdisciplinary research projects, in areas including: biomedicine, climate variability, control of shape memory alloys, image processing, nanotechnology, and quantum information science. This feature of the department, together with our close links with the Faculties of Engineering and Science, as well as the Institute for Quantum Computing, the Centre for Mathematical Medicine, and the Perimeter Institute of Theoretical Physics, provides a rich and stimulating environment for graduate studies.

A majority of our PhD graduates have found employment in universities in Canada and the United States. A minority have established careers in research and development in industry and a few have found high level jobs as financial analysts. Approximately half of our MMath graduates subsequently obtain PhD degrees, while others are successful in obtaining jobs in industry and government that require significant technical expertise.

If you are bright and motivated, and want to do mathematics-based research in a multidisciplinary environment, consider applying for graduate studies in Applied Mathematics.
